Marshalltown adding two to IHSBCA’s Hall of Fame
CEDAR RAPIDS — The Marshalltown section of the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association’s Hall of Fame is expanding this weekend by two.
One of Marshalltown High School’s all-time great baseball players, Reggie Stalzer, and Marshalltown native and longtime umpire Jay Flora are two from a group of seven who will be honored on Saturday with induction into the IHSBCA Hall of Fame at the organization’s annual awards banquet at the Cedar Rapids Marriott.
Stalzer is a 1986 MHS graduate who was a two-time All-State selection on back-to-back state championship teams, and Flora, an Iowa High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame umpire, will represent Marshalltown and join a trio of former Bobcats with their enshrinement on Saturday night. They’ll join longtime head coaches Brad Clement and Steve Hanson, and 2002 MHS grad Jeff Clement as IHSBCA Hall of Famers.
Stalzer was a three-year varsity starter who played third base and pitched for the Bobcats, helping the team win consecutive state championships in 1985 and 1986. Stalzer is the school’s career record holder in pitching wins (35) and innings pitched (270 1/3) as well as triples (8) on offense. He had a career batting average of .405, which ranks sixth all-time at Marshalltown, and a career earned run average of 1.86.
Stalzer was twice named all-conference, all-district, all-state, academic all-state and all-state tournament. He was a second-team All-America selection by Collegiate Baseball and went on to play three years at Iowa State University.
“Quite simply, Reggie was the finest high school baseball player that I had the opportunity to coach,” said Brad Clement.
Stalzer and his family reside in West Des Moines, where he is a freshman baseball coach at Valley High School as well as a third-grade teacher in the Waukee school district.
Flora, who was inducted to the IHSAA’s Officials Hall of Fame in 2020, has been an Iowa high school baseball umpire since 1981. He has umpired in 11 state tournaments and six all-star series.
He has been named District Umpire of the Year five times and State Umpire of the Year once.
Flora and his wife Tammy also reside in West Des Moines.
