SPORTS SHORTS: Comets shot down in regionals by HLV
CONRAD — The BCLUW girls’ basketball team led early but fell behind and couldn’t recover in the second half of a 32-27 loss to HLV in Thursday’s Class 1A Region 2 opener.
The Comets (9-13) held a 10-7 lead after the opening quarter and were tied with the Warriors at halftime. HLV (6-16) got the drop on BCLUW in the third period and outscored the host 11-2. The Comets rallied through the final frame but couldn’t get over the hump, falling short in a season-ending loss.
Klayre Gallentine and Grace Farnsworth led BCLUW with eight points apiece. Farnsworth added 10 rebounds and five steals, while Gallentine had six boards. Sydney Anderson added seven points and six rebounds, and Leah Pieper came off the bench to contribute the Comets’ only other four points.
BCLUW shot just 21.2 percent (11-for-52) from the field and 13.6 percent (3-for-22) from 3-point range against HLV’s 2-3 zone defense.
Mustangs spread the wealth to topple PCM
MONROE — All five starters scored at least nine points as the East Marshall boys’ basketball team used its balance to beat PCM 66-53 in a non-conference contest here Thursday night.
Landen Neuroth and Junior Brown scored 16 points apiece, Carter Anderson had 12 points, Adrian Arifi scored 11 and Leland Hamilton-Youngbird chipped in nine as the Mustangs (7-14) closed the regular season with a win.
Neuroth also tallied eight rebounds and five assists, while Arifi had eight assists and six boards for East Marshall. Anderson added three steals to lead the defense.
Jacob Wendt had 16 points, nine rebounds and seven assists to lead PCM (7-14). Gavin VanGorp finished with 14 points for the Mustangs.
