Bobcat swimmers score five spots for state meet
MASON CITY — Every Marshalltown boys’ swimming entrant in Saturday’s district meet at Mason City High School swam its season-best time as the Bobcats qualified five events for the upcoming state meet.
Marshalltown emerged in third place in the eight-team invitational, scoring 282 points to push past a higher-ranked team in Decorah (212) to earn the bronze. Cedar Falls (490) and Ankeny (465) claimed the top two spots in the meet.
In all, the Bobcats qualified five swimmers for five events, with three individual qualifiers and two relays earning their spots at state this coming weekend in Iowa City. The individual preliminaries begin at 5:30 p.m. Friday at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center at the University of Iowa, and relays and individual finals are Saturday, Feb. 10, starting at 12:30 p.m.
Marshalltown earned its spots by going 27-for-27 in swimming its fastest times of the season, with only one relay split coming up just short in earning the Bobcats a perfect 36-for-36 overall. The Bobcats’ three relays chopped a combined 15 seconds off their bests of the winter, while innumerable seconds were sliced off individual events during the day.
“We did everything we could in the pool,” said MHS head coach Mike Loupee. “We performed really well. Everybody dropped time, and that’s what we were there for.”
Individually, Marshalltown made it to state in three events: Charles Gilbertson in the 100-yard butterfly; Lincoln Barker in the 500 freestyle; and Sam Greazel in the 100 breaststroke. Two Bobcat relays advanced as well — the 200 medley relay and the 400 freestyle relay.
The 200 medley relay, consisting of Michael Lechnir, Greazel, Gilbertson and Barker, shaved four seconds off its season-best time in taking fourth place at districts with a combined effort of 1 minute, 42.91 seconds. The Bobcats are seeded 19th for state, which is the team’s highest qualifying spot for this weekend.
Gilbertson’s time of 54.40 in the 100 butterfly earned him fifth at districts and has him seeded 29th for state. He had just three-tenths of a second to spare in reaching the state meet, as 54.72 was the 32nd and final qualifying time from Saturday’s district competitions.
Barker broke his season-best time in the 500 freestyle by 13 seconds and qualfied by one second, as his fourth-place clocking of 5:01.32 has him seeded 29th for state.
Greazel’s time of 1:02.61 was good for seventh at districts and it also reprents the cutoff line for state as he’s seeded 32nd for Friday’s preliminaries.
The 400 freestyle relay quartet of Lechnir, Randall, Gilbertson and Barker qualified more comfortably than the rest of Marshalltown’s state entries, as the season-best clocking of 3:23.22 earned the team’s top result at districts — second place — and was more than a second ahead of the cutoff time (3:24.62).
“We swam the fastest we swam all season when it was time to go fast,” Loupee said, “so we’re real pleased overall.
“I went in thinking we could get anywhere from zero to seven or eight events to state, so to get five, that’s a pretty good day.”
