Spartans rip Regals; face Northeast in substates
VAN HORNE — Four players scored in double figures for the seventh-ranked Grundy Center boys’ basketball team, which turned away Iowa City Regina 61-44 in Tuesday’s Class 2A District 7 championship game at Benton Community High School.
The Spartans (21-2) will face Northeast (18-5) in Saturday’s Substate 4 title game at Wartburg College in Waverly for the right to play at state.
Grundy Center got to state last year for the first time since 2003, but suffered a comeback loss to Hudson in the first round.
Grundy Center got a balanced scoring effort to defeat the Regals (19-4) in the district finals. Judd Jirovsky and Tiernan Vokes scored 14 points apiece to lead the Spartans, Brayden Wallis added 13 and Jalen Kirkpatrick added 10.
The Spartans led throughout, scoring the game’s first nine points and never trailing. Grundy led by nine after the opening quarter and the margin never shrunk below five the rest of the way.
Tate Wallace scored 16 points to lead Iowa City Regina (19-4), and Drew Greve added 10 points for the Regals.
