Conrad Legion Auxiliary approves old business

Conrad American Legion Auxiliary Unit #681 met May 17 at the Legion Hall.

The meeting was called to order by President Sue Kitzman with 31 members, officers and guests present. The colors were advanced by Jody Wanken and Legion Post Commander Dan Shine. Kitzman led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance, a moment of silence in honor of POW’s, MIA’s and deceased veterans, prayer and reciting in unison the Preamble to the Constitution of the American Legion Auxiliary. Opening exercises closed by group singing of “Let There be Peace on Earth,” accompanied by Mary Ann Miller. Kitzman welcomed the many guests in attendance for the Memorial Service.

Secretary Sarah Kitzman called Roll and was answered by five officers. She also read the minutes of the April 26 meeting and gave a penny march report. Both were approved as presented. Correspondence consisted of receipt of a check from the family of Janice Beeghly given to the Auxiliary as a memorial for her. Treasurer Susan Sams gave a financial report and her report was approved as given.

Past Presidents Janice Tranbarger and Marjorie Higgins presented a Memorial Service for seven members. The program began with prayer and as each departed member was named a candle was lit. Family members who were present received a poppy followed by a time of sharing memories of: Wilda Schryver a 44 year member; Donnavee McAllister, 37 years; Rose Shine, 50 years; Ardith Donaldson, 69 years; Dorothy Callaway, 51 years; Janice Beeghly, 38 years; and Inez Slinker, 52 years.

The service closed with a poem read by Tranbarger and group singing of “On Eagles Wings,” accompanied by Miller.

A lunch was served by Miller who was assisted by Jody and Laura Wanken.

Old business that was approved included:

Four Merit Awards to Abagail Busch, Carson Hoffman, Abagail Frank and Skye Teckenburg and two Dorothy Callaway Scholarships to Ellie Simpson and Ashley Halverson were given at the recent BCLUW Awards Night.

JoAnn Klein reported Girls State Recognition cords were available to be given to Girls State attendees for 2020 and she had gotten the cords for Ali Clemons and Presley Engle so they had them to wear at commencement.

Flags for Memorial Day will be put out on May 29 with breakfast for the workers to follow at the Hall.

Black Dirt Days was briefly mentioned. The Auxiliary will serve lunch after the parade.
