Court

• Sifredo Ernesto Gomez made an initial appearance on a failure to appear for an arraignment hearing charge. Jeffrey Hazen will continue as counsel. The arraignment hearing will be rescheduled by the District Associate Court. Bond is set at $5,000 cash only.

• Candie L. Vergauwen made an initial appearance on a probation violation charge. The public defender’s office is appointed as counsel. The probation revocation hearing will be scheduled by the District Associate Court. Vergauwen is being held without bond.

• Cory Michael Burroughs made an initial appearance on a operating while intoxicated-first offense charge, a failure to maintain control charge, a no seatbelt charge, a no insurance charge and a operation without registration charge. Burroughs will hire his own counsel. The preliminary hearing is scheduled at 1 p.m. on Aug. 20. A substance abuse evaluation is ordered with the results submitted to the court within 60 days.

• Brian Lacsina Demesa made an initial appearance on a theft-fifth degree charge. Demesa pleaded guilty and the fine is $65 with a $22.75 surcharge, a $125 law enforcement initiative surcharge and $60 in court costs for a total of $272.75 plus restitution if applicable, due within 30 days.

• Travis Snelling made an initial appearance on an assault on persons in certain occupations charge. Chad Frese is appointed as counsel. The preliminary hearing is scheduled at 1 p.m. on Aug. 10. Bond is set at $1,000 cash or surety.

• April Sue Stanley made an initial appearance on a driving while barred charge. The public defender’s office is appointed as counsel. The preliminary hearing is scheduled at 1 p.m. on Aug. 20. Stanley is released on her promise to appear.

• Rafael Barboza made an initial appearance on a public intoxication charge. Barboza pleaded guilty and the fine is $65 with a $22.75 surcharge and $60 in court costs for a total of $147.75, due within 30 days.

• Andrew Smet made an initial appearance on a contempt of court/violation of a no-contact order charge. Marshon Dubbert was appointed as counsel. The contempt hearing is scheduled at 1 p.m. on Aug. 17. Smet was released on his promise to appear. A new no-contact order has been issued for the protected party.

• Christopher Young made an initial appearance on a failure to appear for trial charge. Jeff Hazen will continue as counsel. The pre-trial conference is rescheduled for 1:30 p.m. on Aug. 10 and the trial is rescheduled for 9 a.m. on Aug. 16. Bond is set at $6,000 cash or surety.

• Susan Lewis made an initial appearance on a contempt of court charge. The public defender’s office is appointed as counsel. The contempt hearing is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. on Sept. 19. Lewis is released on her promise to appear.

Marshalltown Police Department

Incidents

• On Tuesday, a theft valued between $200-$500 was reported in the 1000 block of West Church Street.

Arrests

• On Tuesday, Edgar Mosqueda-Meza, 33, was arrested for no proof of vaccination.

Accidents

• On Wednesday, a vehicle driven by a 16-year-old male from Marshalltown was northbound on South Center Street in the inside lane when he quickly changed lanes colliding with a car driven by Warren Allen Paris, 63, of Marshalltown. No injuries were reported. The juvenile was cited for improper use of lanes. Damage to the teen’s vehicle was estimated at $100 while the Paris car received an estimated $2,500 in damage.

• On Wednesday, a vehicle driven by Antonio Meza Alvarado, 35, of Marshalltown, was southbound on South Eighth Avenue when he met another vehicle coming north straight toward him and took evasive action colliding with a legally parked Honda Accord. No injuries were reported. Damage to both vehicles was estimated at $3,000 each.

Arrests

• On Monday, Christopher Young, 47, was arrested for sex offender registry violation-first offense and false report of indictable offense to public entity.

• On Monday, Susan Lewis, 53, was arrested for contempt of court/resisting an order or process of the District Court.

• On Tuesday,Traviss Alexander Snelling, 24, was arrested for assault on persons in certain occupations.

• On Tuesday, Brian Lacsina Demesa, 27, was arrested on a warrant.

• On Tuesday, Sifredo Ernesto Gomez, 26, was arrested on a warrant.

Grundy County Sheriff

Arrests

• On July 7, Kirk Burkle, 31, of Wellsburg, was arrested in Wellsburg and charged with operating while intoxicated-first offenser and two counts of child endangerment. Burkle posted bond and was released.

• On July 16, Lisa Speicher, 41, of Eldora, was arrested on 290th Street east of S-75 on a Polk County warrant charging her with probation violation. Speicher was held in the Hardin County Jail and then released to Polk County authorities.

• On July 26, Ronald Findlay, 47, of Conrad, was arrested at his home for domestic abuse assault. Findlay was released on his promise to appear.

Accidents

• On Saturday, a car driven by Hannah Stumburg, 22, of Grundy Center, was northbound on Highway 14 when it collided with the rear of a vehicle driven by Leland Rieks, 26, of Grundy Center, which slowed for a vehicle turning into its driveway. No injuries were reported. Damage to the Stumburg car was estimated at $4,000 while the Rieks vehicle sustained an estimated $5,000 in damage.
