BIG FOUR HOOPS: Panthers put away Valparaiso
CEDAR FALLS — Will Hornseth’s 16 points helped Northern Iowa defeat Valparaiso 58-48 on Monday.
Hornseth added seven rebounds for the Panthers (10-3, 2-0 Missouri Valley Conference). Trey Campbell scored 12 points while going 3 of 7 from the floor, and Ben Schwieger had nine points and finished 4 of 6 from the field.
Owen Dease led the Beacons (6-7, 0-2) in scoring, finishing with 18 points. JT Pettigrew added six points and seven rebounds for Valparaiso, and Sader Servilus finished with six points.
Northern Iowa was tied with Valparaiso at the half, 22-22, with Hornseth (seven points) the high scorer before the break. Leon Bond III’s free throw with 15:17 remaining in the second half gave Northern Iowa the lead for good at 29-28.
Illinois St. 73, Drake 56
DES MOINES — Chase Walker had 17 points in Illinois State’s 73-56 win against Drake on Monday.
Walker shot 6 of 7 from the field and 5 of 7 from the free-throw line for the Redbirds (11-3, 3-0 Missouri Valley Conference). Johnny Kinziger scored 15 points while shooting 5 for 8 (3 for 5 from 3-point range) and 2 of 4 from the free-throw line and added six rebounds. Boden Skunberg shot 5 for 8, including 3 for 6 from beyond the arc to finish with 14 points and five rebounds.
Okku Federiko led the Bulldogs (7-7, 1-2) in scoring, finishing with 11 points and four steals. Jalen Quinn added 10 points for Drake.
WOMEN
Drake 78, Illinois-Chicago 62
CHICAGO — Abbie Aalsma scored a career-high 30 points to power the Drake women’s basketball team to a 78-62 victory over Illinois-Chicago in Monday’s Missouri Valley Conference clash inside Credit Union 1 Arena.
Aalsma shot 12-of-19 from the field, going 6-of-9 from 3-point range, on her way to Drake’s first 30-point performance since Katie Dinnebier did the same at UIC last season.
Lexi Carlsen added 13 points, her top output as a Bulldog, and Anna Becker chipped in nine points and a game-high nine rebounds.
Jessica Carrothers scored a team-leading 26 points to lead Illinois-Chicago (6-7, 1-1). She was the team’s only double-digit scorer.
Drake (3-9, 2-0) returns home to host Southern Illinois on Friday at 6 p.m.
UNI 86, Valparaiso 52
VALPARAISO, Ind. — Jenna Twedt made five of Northern Iowa’s 15 3-pointers as the Panther women’s basketball team blasted Valparaiso 86-52 on Monday in Missouri Valley Conference play.
The Panthers (6-6, 2-0) shot 15-for-31 from 3-point land while also outrebounding the Beacons 48-39.
Twedt went 6-for-13 from the field and 5-of-11 from distance, leading UNI with 18 points. Kaylynn Janes went 4-for-4 from 3-point range to contribute 16 points off the bench, while Taryn Wharton (12), Ryley Goebel (11) and Bri Robinson (10) also reached double figures for the Panthers.
Goebel got a game-high 13 rebounds to earn the double-double.
Fiona Connolly led Valparaiso (0-13, 0-2) with 10 points.
UNI goes on the road Wednesday with an MVC game at Illinois-Chicago.
