SPORTS SHORTS: Trojans topple Spartans in girls basketball showdown
STATE CENTER — The West Marshall girls’ basketball team held Grundy Center scoreless for a pivotal five-minute stretch in the fourth quarter as the Trojans took a 54-46 victory over the Spartans on Thursday night.
Bella Borgos pouredd in a game-high 22 points to lead West Marshall (5-1), making five 3-pointers on the night. Riley Randall also cashed in five 3-pointers on her way to 15 points, and Lily Zahnd chipped in nine points for the Trojans.
West Marshall and Grundy Center (2-2) were tied at 41-all with five minutes left but the Spartans didn’t score again until the final minute.
Ava Mundt scored 14 points to lead Grundy Center, while Kali Aldrich added 10 points. Karlee Lynch finished with eight points, Maddy Hendershot got seven and Raelyn Steinmeyer added five.
Mustangs hang around but fall to South Hardin
ELDORA — South Hardin started fast and finished off the East Marshall boys’ basketball team for a 71-62 win in Tuesday’s NICL West Division clash.
The host Tigers (3-0, 1-0) led 43-26 at halftime and cruised from there.
Cody Weaver led four Mustang scorers in double digits, finishing with 14 points. Leland Hamilton-Youngbird added 12 points on four 3-pointers, Blake Neuroth got 11 points and Cael Curphy finished with 10 for East Marshall (0-4, 0-1).
West Marshall boys no match for GVC
DES MOINES — Four players scored in double figures as Grand View Christian remained unbeaten with a 70-28 triumph over the West Marshall boys’ basketball team in Tuesday’s Heart of Iowa Conference contest.
Emiliano Barrantes had 22 points, 14 rebounds and five blocked shots to lead the Thunder (3-0, 3-0). Jameson Scharnberg added 18 points, Brayden Hoben had 14 points, and Thomas Childs came away with 11 points and 10 assists.
AJ Dee scored 10 points to lead West Marshall (2-3, 1-2), which trailed 35-6 at the half. Lucas Barnes added seven points and Jace Eich had four for the Trojans.
Redhawks outrun GMG in Iowa Star play
TRAER — Josh Dostal dropped a huge double-double to help lead North Tama to a 65-58 win over GMG in Tuesday’s Iowa Star Conference boys basketball showdown.
Dostal scored a game-high 26 points to go with 10 rebounds, leading the Redhawks (3-1, 2-1) to the divisional win. Kayler Morris contributed 18 points, six rebounds and four steals, while Kayvin Morris and Brayton Cibula scored eight points apiece. Cibula had a team-leading 15 rebounds.
GMG (1-2, 0-2) was led by Rider Kupka with 21 points. Colin Teske tallied four 3-pointers on his way to 14 points, and Connor Bryant added 11 points.
North Tama outlasts Wolverine girls
TRAER — The North Tama girls’ basketball team held off GMG for a 39-34 win in Iowa Star Conference play here Tuesday night.
Ava Breakenridge scored a game-high 11 points to lead the host Redhawks (3-1, 2-1), also contributing eight rebounds, seven assists and six steals. Kruiz Ewoldt added nine points, while Lily Sell had seven points and eight boards.
Makayla Pendleton tallied 10 points to lead GMG, while Skyler Murty chipped in nine points and a game-high 13 boards.
Farnsworth powers Comets
CONRAD — Grace Farnsworth had a double-double of 23 points and 23 rebounds to lead the BCLUW girls’ basketball team to a 48-45 win over Baxter in Tuesday’s Iowa Star Conference contest.
Farnsworth was 6-of-16 from the field and 11-of-22 at the free-throw line to help the Comets (3-2, 3-0) remain unbeaten in Iowa Star South Division play. Twelve of her 23 rebounds were on the offensive glass, and she also had four steals in the win.
Klayre Gallentine added three 3-pointers on her way to 12 points for BCLUW.
